Overview

Three companies, one stand

Interactive City Lab is a joint stand by three Berlin companies at the Smart Country Convention, Germany’s leading event for smart cities and e-government.

Interactive Scape, Elie and Form Follows You each bring a different approach to smart city planning. Together they present partner and customer solutions for cities and municipalities.

01 · Concept

An identity built on the Game of Life

The first challenge was an identity for a consortium of three companies with different planning tools. I sketched the visitor flow, planned the exhibit layout with the project manager, and built the identity on John Horton Conway’s Game of Life (1970).

In the Game of Life, every cell on an infinite grid is live or dead and changes with its eight neighbours. I carried these rules into the booth structure, print, video and motion graphics to show how city planning changes with digital tools.

  • < 2A live cell with fewer than two neighbours dies (underpopulation).
  • 2 – 3A live cell with two or three neighbours lives on.
  • > 3A live cell with more than three neighbours dies (overpopulation).
  • = 3A dead cell with exactly three neighbours comes alive (reproduction).

A habitat of pixels

Raw booth frames stand for empty pixels. Translucent panels on the exhibition stations stand for living pixels, with the planning tools inside them.

During the build and the show, I supported the team on site: fine-tuning motion graphics on the screens, making show videos, and producing and editing video in real time for the marketing team.

Multi-user planning tool
Multi-user planning toolPartners used multitouch tables with Scape X® Object Recognition, so several people could work on the same project at once.

Video contentI interviewed exhibitors about their solutions during the show and adapted the footage with the marketing team for different platforms afterwards.
If you are looking for someone who not only fulfils a fixed task, but also enriches the team with creativity, adaptability and good humour, Hansol is the right choice.

He’s like a joker in the team: versatile, creative, and brings an infectious energy to every project. At trade fairs he not only helps with booth design and building with his own hands, he is also a great networker who has helped open up new business opportunities.
